چکیده

An essential element in the Free Flight concept is the detection and avoidance of air tra c con icts. A con ict occurs when the required separation between two aircraft, namely the ownship and the intruder, is lost. Con ict detection and resolution systems predict loss of separation and output con ict avoidance maneuvers that divert the ownship from its original trajectory. In this paper, we address the problem of redirecting the ownship to its original path, in a geometric optimal way, without introducing new con icts. We call this concept Resolution and Recovery. Given the current 3-dimensional position and velocity vectors of two aircraft in predicted con ict and the ownship's required time of arrival at the target point, the resolution and recovery algorithm outputs a choice of maneuvers. Each maneuver comprises an escape course and a recovery course to be followed by the ownship. The escape course brings the ownship o the predicted con ict and the recovery course returns it to the original target point. We provide a rigorous mathematical description of the problem and show that the algorithm is correct, i.e., no matter which of the proposed maneuvers the ownship picks, it will arrive at the target point at the scheduled time while maintaining the minimum required separation to the intruder at all times.

Formal Analysis of Air Traffic Management Systems: the Case of Conflict Resolution and Recovery

New air traffic management concepts distribute the responsibility for traffic separation among the several actors of the aerospace system. As a consequence, these concepts move the safety risk from human controllers to the onboard software and hardware systems. One example of the new kind of distributed systems is air traffic conflict detection and resolution. Traditional methods for safety ana...

Optimizing B-splines using Genetic Algorithms Applied to Air-traffic Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution has always been a sensitive matter in air-traffic management. Current European projects aim partial or total automation of air traffic control to deal with the constant growth of air traffic. Technological advances on flight management system allows us to consider an automatic conflict resolution using continuous trajectories. In this paper, we present a new methodology that...

Formal Verification of an Optimal Air Traffic Conflict Resolution and Recovery Algorithm

Highly accurate positioning systems and new broadcasting technology have enabled air traffic management concepts where the responsibility for aircraft separation resides on pilots rather than on air traffic controllers. The Formal Methods Group at the National Institute of Aerospace and NASA Langley Research Center has proposed and formally verified an algorithm, called KB3D, for distributed th...

Fast-time Simulation Evaluation of a Conflict Resolution Algorithm under High Air Traffic Demand

In this paper, an automated conflict resolution algorithm is evaluated based on fast-time simulations of nominal and heavily increased air traffic demand in the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace. The algorithm under study is designed to support an automated separation assurance capability for next-generation air traffic management systems. It resolves detected conflicts that a...

Automated Conflict Resolution for Air Traffic Control

This paper describes a conflict resolution algorithm that can provide automated separation assurance for the next generation air traffic control system. The algorithm generates resolution trajectories that can be sent to the aircraft from a ground-based system via data link. With suitable reconfiguration the algorithm can also be installed on board aircraft to support airborne separation assura...
